A tragic story of the struggle of Donegal girl, Norah Ryan against poverty in turn-of-the-century Glasgow by Patrick MacGill (1889 –1963), an Irish journalist, poet and novelist, known as "The Navvy Poet". “The Rat Pit” became a semi sequel to “Children of the Dead End”, MacGill's autobiographical novel of his childhood in Ireland and later Scotland. The story Norah Ryan, who is forced into the harshest of lives, is filled with fierce anticlericalism and describes the social conditions in the early years of the century.
