MacGill Patrick
Patrick MacGill (24 December 1889 – November 1963) was an Irish journalist, poet and novelist, known as "The Navvy Poet" because he had worked as a navvy before he began writing. MacGill was born in Glenties, County Donegal. A statue in his honour is on the bridge where the main street crosses the river in Glenties. During the First World War, MacGill served with the London Irish Rifles (1/18th Battalion, The London Regiment) and was wounded at the Battle of Loos on 28 October 1915.[1] MacGill wrote a memoir-type novel called "Children of the Deadend". In early 2008, a docu-drama starring Stephen Rea was made about the life of Patrick MacGill. One of the film's locations was the boathouse of Edinburgh Canal Society at Edinburgh on the Union Canal, and one of its rowing boats.

Practically the whole book was written in the scene of action, and the chapter dealing with our night at Les Brebis, prior to the Big. Push, was written in the trench between midnight and dawn of September 25th; the concluding chapter in the hospital at Versailles two days after I had been wounded at Loos.

“Children of the Dead End” by Patrick MacGill, an Irish novelist, known as "The Navy Poet", appears to be his own autobiography, though written as a fiction novel. The book transports readers to the end of the 19th century, the author’s childhood times in Ireland; and continues the narration of the journey and events of his further navying life. Exhausted by the grinding poverty, the hero leaves home and at the age of 12 in search of work ‘beyond the hills’; works to exhaustion for indifferent tenant farmers, and runs away, joining the emigrants headed for Scotland. The book, a moving tale of lost love, published in 1914, still remains fresh and exciting reading.

Excerpt from book: CHAPTER III OUR FRENCH BILLETS The fog is white on Glenties moors, The road is grey from Glenties town, Oh! lone grey road and ghost white fog, And ah! the homely moors of brown. THE farmhouse where we were billeted reminded me strongly of my home in Donegal with its fields and dusky evenings and its spirit of brooding quiet. Nothing will persuade me, except perhaps the Censor, that it is not the home of Marie Claire, it so fits in with the description in her book. The farmhouse stands about a hundred yards away from the main road, with a cart track, slushy and muddy, running across the fields to the very door. The whole aspect of the place is forbidding, it looks squalid and dilapidated, and smells of decaying vegetable matter, of manure and every other filth that can find a resting place in the vicinity of an unclean dwelling-place. But it is not dirty; its home-made bread and beer are excellent, the new-laid eggsare delightful for breakfast, the milk and butter, fresh and pure, are dainties that an epicure might rave about. We easily became accustomed to the discomforts of the place, to the midden in the centre of the yard, to the lean long-eared pigs that try to gobble up everything that comes within their reach, to the hens that flutter over our beds and shake the dust of ages from the barn-roof at dawn, to the noisy little children with the dirty faces and meddling fingers, who poke their hands into our haversacks, to the farm servants who inspect all our belongings when we are out on parade, and even, now, we have become accustomed to the very rats that scurry through the barn at midnight and gnaw at our equipment and devour our rations when they get hold of them. Patrick MacGill (1889-1963) was an Irish journalist, poet and novelist, known as "The Navvy Poet" because he had worked as a "navvy" (itinerant labourer) before he began writing. At the age of 19 years he self-published eight thousand copies of a small book (56pp) printed by The Derry Journal which he called Gleanings from a Navvy's Scrapbook (1910). The following year Patrick was working as a journalist for the London Daily Express.
