"The prayers in this little volume come, not from the inner room but from the crowded way of life, where the heedless world pushes many to the wall; they are coined out of sympathy for those who have need" - From Memorial Page. Walter Rauschenbusch was born in 1861 in New York to a German minister and his wife. He became a Baptist Minister and Christian Theologian and was the key figure in the Social Gospel Movement. He taught that there were 6 sins, all of a public nature, which combined to kill Jesus. (1) Religious bigotry (2) the combination of graft and political power (3) the corruption of justice (4) the mob spirit (being "the social group gone mad") and mob action (5) Militarism (6) Class contemparies. He believed that Christianity's purpose was to spread a Kindgom of God, not through a fire and brimstone style of preaching but by leading a Christlike life. His work influenced, among others, Martin Luther King, Desmond Tutu, and Richard Rorty.
