John Chapman was educated at Harvard, was admitted to the bar in 1888, and practiced law until 1898. He is one of the most successful essayists of his period. Emerson and Other Essays was first published in 1898. Essays include Emerson, Walt Whitman, A study of Romeo, Michael Angelo's Sonnets, The Fourth Canto of the Inferno, Robert Browning, and Robert Louis Stevenson.
