Every Man in His Humor
A 1598 play by a contemporary of William Shakespeare, Benjamin Jonson, an English Renaissance dramatist, poet and actor. This work became the first Jonson’s comedy of morals and manners, in prologue of which he firmly casted aside the dominant theatre tradition of that time. In “Every Man in His Humor” the author’s natural wittiness combines successfully with the experience of ancient playwrights. “Humor” here appears to be a conception connected with ancient medicine and referring to one of four liquids, which were believed to imbue human body and define one’s character. Phlegm, blood, white bile and black bile. At that times this knowledge was considered to be scientific.
