The History of Mr. Polly

Book cover
Alfred Polly uses the money he inherits to marry and to set up a shop in a small town. Being quiet and somewhat direction-less, he soon realizes that both of these is not after his heart; and resorts to desperate measures to break free.
Herbert George Wells, an English author, best known for his work in the science fiction genre, with irony and sadness describes here a small character, petty bourgeois. Living in an atmosphere of stagnant lower-middle class, the protagonist, not satisfied with his life, is forced to rush about vicious circle.
The comic novel “The History of Mr. Polly” was firs published in 1910 and was later adapted for film and television.
