Book cover
A 1852 bestseller by Susan Bogert Warner, a nineteenth century American evangelical writer of religious fiction, children's fiction, and theological works. The book tells a sentimental story of a young orphan, Fleda Ringan, who tries to support her family by farming, cooking, making maple sugar and selling flowers and garden produce. The other Warner’s best remembered popular novel is The Wide, Wide World (1850). The auther wrote under the pseudonym Elizabeth Wetherell, and created twenty-seven novels, four volumes of biblical history, one biblical study, various religious tracts, a prize-winning essay on patriotism. She wrote about those experiences she knew firsthand – financial difficulty, spiritual uncertainty, moral growth, true friendship, and the loss of a parent.
