A 1900 novella by an Austrian author and dramatist Dr. Arthur Schnitzler (1862 – 1931). “Bertha Garlan” offers a critical description of Austrian society, stagnant province, hypocrisy that resides the burgher environment; sketches of nature and scenes of city life. Presenting the psychological skill of the author, the book tells a story of a woman’s life that makes us to recollect Madame Bovary of Gustave Flaubert and psychological novellas by Guy de Maupassant. “Bertha Garlan” was later republished as a play.
