While above us and beyond the influence of the earth's motion upon its axis—the trade winds and ail surface disturbances—the grain of the ever- stable ether and elemental gases shown in vertical prisms like rainbow-pillars of some grand cathedral or temple of the spirits of the air. Whether this remarkable demonstration of the higher regions should be accreditedto the horizontal sun-rays of the early morning, or was caused by a congestion of color values due to the presence or absence of humidity — or was but the fore-gleams of a terrible and tremendous storm (thru which we sailed some hours later) we could not determine; tho probably the latter, as indicated by the presence of "False-Suns" and "Halo-Rings" often preceding storms. For a short time we paused above Jerusalem, musing on departed greatness, longing for a vision of future glories. "0, Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that kil- lest the prophets and stonest them that are sent unto thee, how often I would have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not.
