Excerpt from book: CHAPTER IV RELIGION AND THE CATEGORIES And under this head it may suggest itself, from much that precedes, as for us in place, to consider only: the Aufklarung in its two numbers, No. 1 and No. 2. The Aufklarung, as the Aufklarung generally, means the " discrepancies" that, whatever it is that, in the Bible, let it be Old or let it be New, checksfor instance, the Miracle of the Swine. We have the report of it, not in John, but in all the three Synoptics, Matthew, Mark, and Luke, and in all of them substantially to the same effect: namely, that unclean spirits, called Legion, having one or two men demoniacally in possession, were cast out of him or them by the Saviour, and further ordered by Him, but at their own request, to enter into a great herd of many swine (some two thousand of them) then feeding at some distance off, which great herd of many swine thereupon instantly rushed down a steep place into the sea, and there perished, or were choked. The whole account in each of the threeEvangelists is circumstantially a very full one ; but I have not, in any respect, so to speak, mitigated it. And at the same time, I cannot but think the spirit of fairness on my part that has dictated my choice of the example, will be readily allowed me even by the most devoted member of No. 1. Shakespeare himself does not hesitate to allow his Jew to speak derisively of " the habitation which your prophet, the Nazarite, conjured the devil into," and without protest either, even on the part of the Christian, who at that early day, heard him. This may suggest that even in the days of Shakespeare the Aufklarung No. 1 had already at least begun.
