Could it have been otherwise, emanating, as it does, from a holy Godand written by the inspiration of the Holy Ghost ? In truth, it may be asserted, without fear of contradiction, that the ultimate design of the revelation of God's will, whether contained in the Old or New Testament, is to restore fallen man to a capacity for the enjoyment of the divine service and presence, by his renewal in the divine imageeven "the putting on the new man, which, after God, is created in righteousness and true holiness." In subserviency to this design, we find that the doctrines of Scripture are uniformly exhibited, as having a direct tendency, when cordially embraced, through the power of the Holy Spirit, to exercise a sanctifying influence over the heart and life. And the conviction is thus irresistibly forced on our minds, that the clearest conception, or the warmest advocacy, of divine truth, if it fail to accomplish this result, is, in the estimation of Jehovah, nothing worthcannot be produced by the operation of that Spirit, whose seal upon the soul is holinessand does not, in the smallest degree, promote in us the end for which a gracious God has vouchsafed to us a revelation of His will. To prove this position by a detailed examination of the passages, which would substantiate its truth, would be to transcribe a very large portion of the word of God.
