JAMES FRASER SECOND BISHOP OF MANCHESTER - I887 - P R E F A C E - THE thanks of the readers of this book, and of the Author, are due to Mrs. Fraser, and to the friends of the late Bishop who have kindly allowed selections from their letters to be published, or have furnished memoranda of their intercourse with him. Nothing else seems to be needed in the way of preface to a biography of this class. Ko one can doubt that this time has need of men of faith, simplicity, and courage, and of these qualities Bishop Fraser was a bright example. My work has been only to let him paint his own picture good wine needs no bush. CONTENTS. PART I. CHAPTER I. PAGE EARLY YEARS. BRIDGENORTH AKI SHREWSBURY SCHOOLS, LIKC0I. The Church was the mediator, check, and democratic principle in Europe- Latimer, Wicliffe, Arundel, Cobham, Anthony Parsons, Sir Harry Vane, George Fox, Penn, Bunyan, are the democrats, as well as the saints, of their times. The Catholic Church, thrown on this toiling, serious people, has made in fourteen centuries a massive system, close fitted to the manners and l genius of the country, at once domestical and stately. In the long time it has blended with everything in heaven above and the earth beneath. - ELIERSONS English Traits- Religion.
