adrift on an ice pan

Book cover
A dramatic true story of the struggle with death on an ice pan off the northern coast of Newfoundland. In the year 1908 Dr. Grenfell rushed to help his young patient, for that was a matter of life and death. He set out in his dog sled and, intending to save a few miles, almost drowned in the ice-cold water. He lost one dog, but the others managed to climb on to an ice pan, which drifted out to sea in an offshore wind. The events that followed demonstrate the inventive presence of mind, tenacity and quick thinking of the famous Labrador doctor in such hopeless conditions. The book was written by Sir Wilfred Thomason Grenfell (1865 –1940), a medical missionary to Newfoundland and Labrador. Includes a biographical sketch.
