December 2005 Titahi Bay location
A network of new mobile phone sites is needed in Porirua by Vodafone New Zealand Ltd to ensure reliable coverage for our business and residential customers throughout the area. Several individual sites have already been approved, but Vodafone and Porirua City Council want residents to have the full picture, and opportunities to comment on options for a complete network rather than on a site-by-site basis.
A copy of two network options is attached, and if you are unable to come to the Open Day, it would be most helpful if you could indicate on the supplied form which network option you prefer and return your feedback on the reply paid form.
Comment by Time Traveller. Several months prior to construction at the Titahi Bay location option B, I noted a light canopy truck on site drilling for core samples to prove the foundations. Then one day without consultation, construction began, and before the protesters managed to mobilise and stop the work, the foundations were finished, the control cabinet in place and being wired up. Then some time later after the protesters had proved something or other, and this consultation document had been distributed, Vodafone went and installed their cell tower at location A, a mere 300 metres away. And that's all it took to to make the protesters feel they had won the day. Vodafone then went back and removed their unfinished work at location B.
In my humble opinion Vodafone should have just dug a hole at their second best location and waited until the protesters had had their song and dance, then gone and put their cell tower at the preferred location. But then, maybe that was what Vodafone did do and option A was their preferred location all along.
And all the time, NZ's tallest radio mast at 220 metres stood in the background, less than two kilometres away, with considerably higher power output, (covering at least the Southern Pacific) than little old poor Vodafone's Cell Tower with a maximum range of under 10 kilometres.
