Matthew Phipps Shiel, a prolific British writer was the author of numerous novels and short stories, concerning supernatural, exaggerated and adventurous events. In his novel “The Purple Cloud” he relates a curse, which came from the Arctic to destroy the humanity. In the course of time, the only single man on the planet was left alive. His feelings, his understanding of the situation, wandering across the planet, being actually the only owner of the Earth; countless dead bodies, accessible riches – all these reproduced with a striking, almost magical, vividness.
