The main story deals with a young Scotsman, visiting London, whe decides he would like to visit the shadiest and poorest parts of the city. In those days there was grinding poverty among the unemployed. We are taken on various trips around the capital. There is a plot between his landlord and a solicitor to have him branded as a thief, but this is thwarted, and the two miscreants are punished instead.
