Wells Article from "The Commonwealth" [Everett, WA], whole no. 93 (October 11, 1912) in which Wells argues that the Washington state primary law requiring election of Precinct Committeemen was contradictory, since the Socialist Party of Washington with its dues-paying membership constituted both a voluntary association, not regulated under the law, and a political party. The 1912 Washington primary election saw an effort by an insurgent right wing based in Seattle and headed by attorney E.J. Brown to capture the Socialist Party of Washington via the newly established instrument of Precinct Committeemen, which the regular Socialist Party refused to recognize.
