Lightborn
The Lightborn Prince is killed. One of his most trusted bodyguards may have been responsible through the use of a magic she could not anticipate or stop. That guard, Floria Whitehand, is one of the Lightborns we see the world with; the other is the new Prince, eldest son and heir of the man who was assassinated and who must now survive a magic-backed coup to retain not merely his title but his very life. Distrust between the Lightborn and the Darkborn is being promoted and inflamed by several factions, while on the sidelines the Shadowborn are clearly gathering strength to attack both races while they are distracted by each other.
