Louis Sachar's much talked-about book HOLES, originally published in the USA in 1998, was the recipient of countless awards, including the National Book Award, the Newbery Medal and "Best Book of the Year" awards from Publisher's Weekly, The New York Times and School Library Journal, and was finally made into a film.
Stanley Yelnats is a troubled boy who is sent to a boys' detention centre, Camp Green Lake. The warden tells the boys that they must dig holes in order to "build character." But Stanley soon realizes that this isn't the real reason why they're being subjected to such treatment. The boys are digging holes because the warden is looking for something --- and Stanley will do his best to dig up the truth.
