There was one thing that I noticed in this series is that the author does a really good job of making sure that after her heroine defeats something apocalyptically big, there's still something left to pose a credible threat. Sometimes she does it by depowering Jo, and sometimes she does it by coming up with a bigger apocalypse for next time, and so far it hasn't gotten annoying.
