Toussaint Louverture, made general in chief of the French army in Saint-Domingue in 1797 by Sonthonax, turned against Sonthonax and actively waged rebellion against the agents of Directoire and Rigaud, commander of the southern province. After the English forces left the island in 1798, Saint-Domingue was thrown into complete anarchy, which bled over into parts of the Spanish colony of Santo-Domingo. The account of the events in Fort-Liberté contains the leadership of Raffin, agent of the Directoire in charge of Fort-Dauphin, the military leadership of citizen Dalban and the falling out of Toussaint Louverture and Dalban with General Moyse (or Moise), also born a slave on the same plantation as Toussaint, and whom Toussaint called his nephew Signatures: a-c (-c4) (c4 verso blank) John Carter Brown Library copy bound between part of hand colored map of northern Italy; "No. 2" in ms. hand on cover
