Clothing for Impoverished Qinghai Rural Residents

Book cover
We want to thank everyone who contributed and, in particular, Brits Abroad, the British International School Shanghai, the British Chamber of Commerce, American Chamber of Commerce, Shanghai Expat Association, the Equatorial Hotel, and Office Lister who contributed time and effort in facilitating the collection in Shanghai. Particular thanks go to AGS Fourwinds for once again organizing and sponsoring the logistics of getting clothes and toys to Qinghai. Here are examples of three recipients: [1] (b. 1973) from Bahu Village and her little son; Caidan (b. 1999), received clothing. There are seven people in her family--her parents-in-law, her husband, two daughters, her son, and herself. Both her parents-in-law are old and she must stay at home to care for Caidan who has an eye problem and her parents-in-law. Her husband earns a little money for the family by collecting and selling caterpillar fungus and by doing menial labor in cities and towns. The money spent on clothes is major expense for her family. She received three shirts, two T- shirts, four sweaters, and four pairs of trousers. She was truly happy with the clothes she estimates that, thanks to this donation, she will save 200 RMB that she would otherwise have had to spend on clothes this year. [2] Lhamojian (b. 1984) is a native of Awuju Village. There are five people in his family who all depend on agricultural and wage work. The family owns no livestock and its income is low compared to other village families. Purchasing clothes is a big burden for this family. He received several T-shirts, shirts, sweater and two pairs of shoes for his family. He was delighted with his new clothing and greatly appreciates the donors' compassion and help. [3] Dorjizhoma (b.1995) is from Sangjorju Village and currently is a Grade Four student in Jinyuan Township School. There are nine people in her family, which is the largest in the village. Her mother passed away when she was one year old and she now lives with her stepmother, father, grandmother, brother, and two step-sisters and brothers. Each village has several families that are considered the poorest families by the local government and her family is one such family. Each year these families receive wheat flour from the government, but this year they still have not received it. Given the poverty of her family, buying new clothes for each person each year is out of the question. This time she received clothes and shoes for her family and herself, which made her very pleased.
