Alfred Heaton Cooper was an English landscape artist who worked in watercolours. He was born in 1864 in Manchester and brought up in Bolton, Lancashire. As a student, he studied European art under George Clausen in London, but finished his studies prematurely to embark on a period of travelling. Whilst in Norway, he became fascinated by the rural lifestyle of the Sogne region, where he eventually set up a studio beside the fjord at Balestrand. There, he married Mathilde. After realising that he could not sustain an income in the area, he returned in 1894 to Bolton but realised there was a greater potential audience amongst the tourists visiting the Lake District. He shipped his log cabin from Norway to Coniston and later relocated to Ambleside. In 1903, Mathilde gave birth to William Heaton Cooper, who would go on to also become a landscpe artist. His portfolio of watercolours cover rural British landscapes, usually of the Lake District, and scenes of Norwegian fjords, particularly Balestrand. He died in the Lake District in 1929.
