Frances Erskine Inglis, later the Marquess of Calderón de la Barca (b. Edinburgh, Scotland, 1804 - d. Madrid, Spain, 1882), [1][2] was sent to the United States in 1836 by Isabel II, where she met Ángel Calderón de la Barca. They married in 1838 and lived in México until 1842. Frances Erskine Inglis is best-known for her book La Vida En México Durante Una Residencia De Dos Años En Este País (Life in Mexico, During a Residence Of Two Years In That Country)[3][4] which published under the name Madame Calderón de la Barca in Boston and London in 1843. She also wrote El Agregado En Madrid O Bocetos De La Corte De Isabel II (1856). La Vida En México is a classic in its genre. She was widowed in 1861. In 1876 she was conferred the title of Marquess by Alfonso XII.
