in 1814 in a country known for its mystic legends, "The Exile of Sara Stevenson" is part-love story, part-ghost story. It is also a charming and heartbreaking account of love and loss.
Sara must remain at the Cape Wrath lighthouse until she gives birth. She is accompanied by her lady's companion, Kate MacKinnon, and Kate's husband, Robbie.
Reclusive William Campbell is the surly light keeper. He seems to resent Sara's presence at the lighthouse, a request forced on him by her father, a prominent engineer who designed the lighthouse and hired William.
The relationship between Sara and William is unpredictable. One moment it is inhospitable and stormy; the next moment, it is calm and cooperative, much like the waters that William patrols.
William is genuinely concerned about Sara's frivolous and often reckless behavior, although his worry is well-masked by his scolding tirades.
Sara had intended to elope with her true love, a sailor named Thomas Crichton, but he failed to meet her. She refuses to accept that Thomas would break his promise. Still believing he will come for her, Sara's faith is tested when she receives a package containing a timepiece she had given him.
The watch is accompanied by a note from a mysterious stranger.
Hannah's characters are tormented and bitter, but subtle threads of humor keep the story from becoming too melancholy.
Intervening spiritual forces will leave readers pondering the belief in a higher power.
