American Amanda Knox has been serving part of a 26-year sentence for the murder of British exchange student Meredith Kercher since her conviction in Italy in December 2009. Starting Dec. 11, an appeal will be heard before an Italian court; Knox's attorneys are attempting to have her sentence reduced.
The case has created a media frenzy:
The father of the murder victim, John Kercher, wrote a letter to Britain's Daily Mail, published on Dec. 2. The headline from the father: "It's utterly despicable that the girl jailed for killing my daughter has become a celebrity."
In it, Kercher recounts turning on the television only to find a British television station featuring Knox's parents as special guests. On the show, they appeal to viewers as to their daughter's innocence.
Kercher says he is aghast at the attention Knox is receiving. Not once, he says, has Knox or her family offered condolences as to the loss of Meredith. Kercher says he thinks about his youngest daughter every single day as if she is still alive. Kercher says all he wants is to be allowed to grieve in peace like any other parent who has lost a child.
Just in time for Christmas, a new book, published by an Italian author in October, should help prove Knox's innocence, according to her parents.
Gathered from someone speaking with Knox over a period of time, "Take Me With You: Conversations with Amanda Knox in Prison" is written by Rocco Girlanda, who believes her to be innocent.
In the book, Girlanda writes that Knox says she doesn't want to be famous. The Italian media latched onto the story when it became news, and Knox became a household name immediately.
