The Public Orations of Demosthenes, volume 2

Book cover
Demosthenes, a prominent Greek statesman, is regarded as the greatest of orators of ancient Athens and perhaps the greatest orator of all times. Besides, Demosthenes was a man of superior moral and intellectual qualities who knew how to use language for its best effects. His orations were clear and well-reasoned; the phrases are brief and full of emotionality and passion. Similes and metaphors increased the impression of the speeches. Expressiveness and important burning issues, flexibility of intonation, worked out gesticulation – these characteristics are based both on analysis of his orations, and on evidence of ancient authors and later researches of his art. In literary heritage of Demosthenes it was his political orations which defined his place in history of oratory. The acknowledgement of his eloquence was so great that contemporaries and later generations used to call him just “Orator.”
