The author Shubhendu Kaushikâs involvement in Spiti was triggered because this beautiful valley in Himachal Pradesh was thrown open to tourism. Having seen the extent of damage to ecosystems that has accompanied large-scale tourism in other Himalayan regions, he decided to spend some time in Spiti and see what could be done to minimise the damage there. As this publication goes to print, he is trying to get the administration and cross-sectional representatives of the people in Spiti to start thinking about the various implications of tourism in the valley and to work on an evolving strategy for 'sustainable tourism', 'ecotourism', 'appropriate', 'alternative' or 'planned tourism'. This publication also follows up to his ideas and intentions publication âTowards a Tourism Strategy in Spitiâ which ideates towards a tourism strategy in Spiti based on an understanding of the tourism phenomenon; what is wrong with it and whether there is an alternative.
